About I’m Jennifer, a Canadian living in the Greater Sudbury in Ontario. In the course of helping highly skilled would be Permanent Residents meet their English language proficiency requirements for immigration, I spent many class hours talking to people all over the world about Canadian culture, our history, the labor market, major industries, our social safety net, our politics and so on. I was introduced to the book Maximum Canada: Toward a Country of 100 Million by Doug Saunders at one point, and got interested in why and how Canada should increase its population to maximize our economy and our society. Cities are growing. Housing isn’t keeping up. Schools are falling apart. There was a pandemic. Jobs seem scarcer. Institutions are digitizing. We’re polarized. We have a medieval electoral system. Is Canada’s social safety net keeping up? Is our quality of life what is was a generation ago? Are we protecting farmland, forests, farms, wild areas, biodiversity? Is our food supply sustainable? Are newcomers treated well and integrated into communities? How are senior citizens doing?
